9. Continued and Supplementary

I want to speak more about “culture related of Taiyaki” flowing last week.

So, tail topic is “White Taiyaki”. And I want to supplement “reaction of overseas”. Because I was not able to write article only a little week 7.

So, let’s start!

First topic is “reaction overseas” s reaction.

Taiyaki not exists overseas. There are also example…Taiyaki and Yakisoba and flow-somen not exists. However, it has been recognized. It is well known.

Theses opportunity are anime and cartoon. They are Japan proud of culture. The character of appears in anime and cartoon, usually eat this food.

If foods do not exist overseas appeared in Japanese anime, the annotation is always written towards the corner.

I want to pick up a one book here.

This book name is “Cool Japan ~the world will want to buy~”. This book’s author is Tomoyuki Sugiyama. He is president of a corporation. He referred to funny things in this book.

Japan government makes Japanese anime fans in overseas to a national policy.

Anime and cartoon are more likely to be accepted unlike others. And they are including a heart and culture of Japan.

I want to go back to the beginning of the story here.

Anime and cartoon are easy to accept. It is strength.

Let’s do imagine.

You watched Japanese anime. At that time interesting things appeared. How it would be if that were the case?

As soon as I found out if I were you. Yes, it is a purpose.

Taiyaki is one of them.

Let me introduce one example here.

Look, do you know this anime? Title is “Keion”.

Girls high school students formed a band. And it is a school anime. This type anime is depicting them everyday.

Azusa Nakano is one of the characters in anime.

She likes Taiyaki very much. There is a scene where Azusa to eat Taiyaki. It writes to there subtitle at that time ”Do you like Taiyaki?”.

It will one trigger to know at the Japanese food.

It should be afraid of Taiyaki!

The second topic is “White Taiyaki”.

Recently, it has become less popular. However, White Taiyaki gained tremendous popular at one time.

So, this is White Taiyaki.

White!

It can be enjoyed glutinous texture. The reason is tapioca flour have been used. It has been so white. White Taiyaki was a great popularity I just remembered. And Taiyaki shop has increased in practice. People did get off the treadmill. Many videos circulated how to make Taiyaki.

I liked White Taiyaki very much. However, I don’t look this recently. It is lonely. It had been judged to be one boom another people. But I was hoping for this. Because…it have also delicious cold and texture is very interesting.

It is driven into closed Taiyaki shops one after the other. There were a lot Taiyaki shops also include stalls near my home. But now, that is left a few stores. This is the story of August. I do not know what is the current in February.

I would hope, not affected by trends.

However, I think that if it would go to the left to posterity, only delicious food.  White Taiyaki did not remnant. That is all.

8. Culture related

Do you know this song?  Then please listen!

So, this song’s name is “Swim! Taiyaki-kun”. It was a smash hit song in 1975. This song has been sold all singles in Japan as of January 2013. And next year (in 1976) they sold combination album of animated children's programs. This song established record sales too. The first prize in Orikon chart continuance six week and sold 50 thousand sheets. This record continued until “The best of detective Conan” was Sold. And it was published in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2009 "the best selling single in Japan". This song was broadcast in program for children”Fold out! ponkikki”.

So, this song worked for Taiyaki spread. It had very important role Taiyaki industry.

Then, in what circumstances made this song?

This song’s lyricist is Hiroo Takada. He is very famous lyricist in Japan. He started from picture book writer, and worked on the lyrics many songs for children. And he likes liquor very much.

One day, he had a pub crawl as usual. At that time he found one store. This store was Taiyaki store.

“Oh,Taiyaki! It is very dear! ”

And he bought Taiyaki. He thought that…

“Taiyaki is eaten as soon as bought with money. It is very poor thing. Oh, I know! I will give the drama to Taiyaki. It is nice idea!! …What drama would be nice? Yeah, Taiyaki is Thailand. Thailand if we say is sea. “

He made a note of this idea at that time.

Then six month later, he found that note. Season was summer. He had been busy with work. The work content of work as described below. He wrote down new song’s lyrics. He felt that it is good. He wrote lyrics in more than thirty minutes at a stretch…

Thus, “Swing! Taiyaki-kun” was born.

There was a lot of social impact. For example…Taiyaki store hab become matrix, Taiyaki machine were sold,. And I found one funny story.

Do you know Ryuichi Sakamoto.

His first record was affected this song. As you know “Swing! Taiyaki-kun” sold explosively. Production could not keep up at that time. So, his record of production has been postponed. After all, release was delayed about six month.

After many cover songs had been released. I will introduce a couple of those famous song and one character.

First, Rinda Yamamoto’s “My lover, Taiyaki-kun.”.

She collaborated “Swim! Taiyaki-kun”’s singer Masato Shimon in music program. However, this song did not sell well. It is a good example of the aims is out received. I thought that it seem the answer song “Swim! Taiyaki-kun”.

Secound, Nokku Yokoyama’s “Good luck! Takoyaki-chan”.
 

I like this song’s atmosphere very much! And this song’s lyrics similar to “Swim! Taiyaki-kun”. Especially, Opening lyrics. Also Takoyaki-chan, ran out the stalls. And, appeared barrel Taiyaki-chan.

Third…Finally came! It is this guy!!

The characters of “Doraemon”…It’s name is Takeshi Gouda.

He like sing a song very much. But he is outrageous illiterate. And he has not noticed this fact on himself. There's this song that was sung by him. 

It is amazing thing taken up in here.

I feel that Heckling is interesting.

This tool name is “Nenroku-mike”.

It can be blown into the cassette tape that people pray to the head. People not be said the word. People just have to pray.

In this way, Taiyaki became famous at once. Influence of this song was great. However I thought. Indeed, the power of culture is great. We must be careful. The power has a possibility.

7 Report and reaction overseas

Urgency!

I went to Tokyo recently and I visited in Yotsuya. If I say Yotsuya… corner of Taiyaki big three shop “Yanagiya” build in this town. So, I went to this shop. Yanagiya build in Yotsuya station near. Walk time is 2~3 minute. Approaches shop I pass by one another people bought Taiyaki. Many people had in hand of Taiyaki. And look procession gradually. There was quite people here. Taiyaki shop’s craftsman baked Taiyaki shore front. He baked Taiyaki one by one polite and fast. Craftsman was one. However procession people continue to rotate surely. I surprised that speed. Craftsman used only 7template. But the order came in no time. 

Yanagiya

I state previous, my sister work in Taiyaki special store. I went to together with her.

I asked her “What is the difference of your shop?”

She said “This shop’s craftsman skilled fantastic. He is no look at hand ladle put Anko.

He remembers the feeling amount of Anko. I look at hand now. This is craftsmanship. I think so.”

It is certainly as said sister. There is no hesitation in his hand of doing. And I thought that why do fast the rotation of the shop.

And this is Yanagiya's Taiyaki.

In the first, I will show you something that I had personal interest.

It is “puno-pun”. Puno-pun birth in South Korea. It came to South Korea to Japan in the 1930s. Taiyaki was underlying for this. Puno-pun atmosphere is a little different from Taiyaki. Because models different from sea bream. Incidentally, Puno-pun model is Crucian. This is known by the street stalls. The low price and easy to eat. This is same as Japan. And this bands member liked Taiyaki is also very famous anecdote.

Steven Tyler is famous in particular. He ate Taiyaki suddenly taken out his pocket in middle of a Japanese music program. However not only dose he like Taiyaki. All member loves of Taiyaki. It is a funny story from here.

After Japan tour they return to home. At that time they bought a lot of Taiyaki. But someone has eaten all in board. Steven was very angry to know it. Aerosmith was facing the crisis of dissolution.

And Joe Berry said in the interview even such a thing ...

In addition, there is a reaction they saw in Japanese anime. “What is that? The heroine eating confectionary is what?”

Taiyaki packed Japanese tradition. May be a lot of things to learn from Taiyaki in Japanese.

6. Taiyaki debate

This time I want to introduce to funny event for Taiyaki. This event happened to one person’s remark. This person name is Tsuruo Ando. He was novelist in Showa era.

Here, I introduce Tsuruo Ando.

 Tsuruo Ando

Tsuruo Ando was born in 1908. Real name is Tsuruo Hanajima. His father was 8^th generation of Gidayuu. Gidayuu is one kind of ballad drama. Gidayuu certify for  important intangible cultural heritage. He grew up in such an environment. He became a writer of Naoki prize. This time’s debate caused by such him.

One newspaper article was published on Yomiuri newspaper in 1953.

Title is “Ajinamono (Things taste)”. This topic had been serialized in this newspaper. The contents of the series were something like this. Celebrities in their respective fields introduce delicious food. Incidentally, He was known as a critic entertainment. Until then had been introduced only luxury food and shop, well known store. However He introduced different strains food. It was a neighborhood candy shop’s Taiyaki.

“We didn’t say that bad or good of Taiyaki. This price is only ten yen. I taught that human honesty by Taiyaki.”

He said after that this episode. So, I tried to translate for English this episode.

Wakaba's dish

Tsuruo Ando felt the sincerity of the human by this episode. Therefore he wrote this episode. However, received many refute opinions. Famous an objection was Kajiro Yamamoto. He was a film director. And he was famous gourmet. Why was he refuted? The reason was that he had to favor the Naniwaya. Naniwaya’s taiyaki and Wakaba’s taiyaki were different types. And Mr.Yamamoto and Naniwaya’s owner Mr.Kanbe friendship were deep. This debate became a controversy involved the media at that time.

Taiyaki shop Wakaba had became famous in the wake of this debate.

And noe is called “Tokyo Big there” sequence “Yanagiya in Ningyocho” and “Total upsteam of Naniwaya in Azabu”.

Tsuruo Ando said later such a thing.

5. Taiyaki origin store

Before, I talked about how many kind of Taiyaki.

Finally I write about “Taiyaki real origin store”. I was gathered documentation this week and a little while ago.

Taiyaki origin store is “Naniyaya” in Tokyo. This theory is most famous. However, this theory said to be suspicious recently. It is said that Taiyaki invented by Seijiro Kanbe in 1909. So Taiyaki had on the 100^th anniversary. Then why is “origin store is Naniyawa” theory spread around Japan. And how is real origin store?

I want to talk about those two main points this time.

First, I write about why is “origin store is Naniyawa” theory spread around Japan.

This theory caused of one book. This book’s name is “Social situation and diet history”. This book published in 1997.

“ Mr.Kanbe invented Taiyaki. He sold Taiyaki pull the rear car and made it in 1909. Naniwaya established this time. One Taiyaki price was one penny at that time.”

At first sight, we don’t feel sense of discomfort. But, we would understand only this sentence one thing. It is this book’s writer Hidetoshi Kato fall to verification about this matter of Taiyaki birth. So, rear car didn’t exist in 1909. Real car invented by Toraichi Mochizuki in 1921. Perhaps, Mr. Kato wanted to say about rear car’s origin Daihachi-car. However, this excuse is fall flat. If Mr.Kanbe pulled the rear car in 1909, it will be that he was an inventor of rear car. In other words, Mr. Kato wrote this sentence no verified. Incidentally coverage destination is Morikazu Kanbe. He is Seijiro kanbe’s son.

In addition, there is also this book published time concern with hit of one song. This song is “oyoge-Taiyakikun”. This song hit caused interesting for Taiyaki birth. Naniwaya

The most famous theory another Naniwaya is Hinodeya. However, this store closed about 10 years before. Web page of Tsu tourism association write about “Taiyaki born in Tsu. It was provided by Hinodeya. This store’s Taiyaki opened in department store at that time.

And I found one thing. I said definitely.

Taiyaki exist in 1906. It was published in the newspaper article in 1911. A content of an article was common people die in good poisoning. The cause was Taiyaki. Taiyaki store’s master name is Tomokichi Yamaguchi. He runs this store from five years ago. Namely, Taiyaki exist in 1906. In regard to Mr.Kato’s sentence Taiyaki invented in 1909. There is more. This newspaper didn’t annotate for Taiyaki. We read from this point. Taiyaki already spread common people life in 1906. Because, Naniwaya theory is contradict.

After all, we didn’t say clearly “this store is Taiyaki origin store”. This problem is very difficult.

4. How many kind

First, I want to talk one thing. Originally planned, this week plan was “Real origin store.” However, convenience has become bad. I did not gather enough material. I want to postpone next week.

Well, let’s start how many kind of Taiyaki form.

At first, I explain how to baked Taiyaki types.

Approximately, it is two types. There are those that baked Taiyaki one by one, and multiple Taiyaki at the same time.

1. Natural type

The type of Taiyaki with the tip of the handle of the scissors like a big, red bean paste and pour the dough. And turn one by one. This type tried craftsmanship. It was the mainstream until such time. The reason is that a song was a hit. This method is very inefficient as you can see. Because not baked a lot of Taiyaki one time. 2. Farming type

This type we often see type. Stalls in summer festival, department store and night shop… would be better to say that these store are dealing with a this type. This type has a lot of advantages.

Shops can produce a lot of Taiyaki. Forms of Taiyaki are aligned uniformity. How to make is early and easy. Shops can offer the same confectionary at any time. Make freely from plump to thin dough.

Taiyaki were spread so far possible because exist this type. This type with the advent of this type baked, many chain stores were born.

Taiyaki is a relatively new confectionary another Japanese confectionary. Taiyaki was born in Meiji period. Taiyaki still now do to develop! I expect future of Taiyaki.

3. Taiyaki origin

Last time, I talked about Taiyaki predecessor organization Manjyu. This time I want to talk about Taiyaki origin Imagawayaki.

First, Azuki was very expensive goods until the Edo period. Common people did not eat Azuki. And Azuki has not in sugar before that. People were eating while boiled Azuki. They are not sweet. But it was also expensive goods for common people. Because sugar valuable goods in Japan at the time. Such a luxury item Sugar was began to domestic production in Japan. Eight generation general Yoshimune Tokugawa was order to make sugar in Japanese domestic. It was inspired. Various clan started to research how to purifying the sugar. The results, sugar are spread to the common people. And indispensable to Japanese confectionery Wasanbon was born in this among the process.

Azuki, sugar, Manjyu…protagonist has appeared all together.

As mentioned before, Imagawayaki is far from the genealogy of Manjyu and traditional Japanese confectionery. Many confectionaries similar to Imagawayaki exist across the country so many. Any calling out is a little different. It may be important things here.

Bake or steam.

It is the absolute difference of Manjyu and Imagawayaki.

I think so certainly. I have the image of Manjyu is Japanese confectionary. But Imagawayaki is no. Absolutely, I cannot think so. Also, many people cannot think so too. “Steam” is most major engraining in Japanese confectionary.

Around the same time confectionary was born “Mikasayama”. This is so called Dorayaki.

・ How to Mikasayama

The flour, eggs and sugar fit knead. Pour the liquid into the mating type pan with a round hole. Rounding put formation Makicha an or Yaehiki an. However, Imagawayaki had been treated when Imagawayaki was born that Manjyu. Wrote in the book of the Showa era, “Imagawayaki Manjyu”. At this time, people confused how to call by Imagawayaki.
